Our Story
Dogs were always part of the picture, right alongside the other animals that kept life busy. They worked, they played, and somehow always managed to steady the rhythm of childhood days.
As life moved on, dogs weren’t part of the household for a time. That changed when a little dappled dachshund wandered in, quickly finding a place in the family. Sadly, after a brief stay at the shelter, he came home only to fall ill with parvo. His time was heartbreakingly short, gone before a bond could even grow.
Later came Teddy, a gentle chow who quickly became part of the family, especially with the children. When health issues made life harder for her, neighbors stepped in with compassion. After adding her to their home, they built a ramp, caring for her legs, and even welcoming another chow as her companion. Teddy had found her forever home, surrounded by love and care, and it was clear she finally had the life she deserved.
Years later, when life was full with teenagers, a daughter, and the daily juggle of family and work, a black-and-white pup named Nymeria arrived. She belonged to the oldest and he didn't want to share. It didn't take long for me to break down.
Saved By Gunner. The search for a dog truly my own began in March of 2013. One evening, a brindle pup on the Multnomah County Shelter page caught my eye and instantly felt like a must-have. The next morning, with Nymeria along for the ride, we set out “just to look.”
When we reached Gunner’s kennel, my excitement gave me away. During the meet-and-greet, this skinny, flaky pup greeted us by leaping up—and promptly peeing on all three of us. While the others listed reasons to hesitate, my heart was already set. The real test came when Nymeria was introduced. The moment they bowed into play, it felt like surfacing for air after being underwater too long. At last, I had found my dog—Gunner.
